Barcelona hosts Joint Symposium on sustainable fuels for hard-to-abate sectors

On 28–29 May 2026, Barcelona hosted the “From Waste to Sustainable Fuels” Joint Symposium, a two-day event focused on how waste can be transformed into sustainable fuels for hard-to-abate sectors.

Co-organised by seven European projects – BeBOP, Bio-MeGaFuel, Flexby, FUEL-UP, Fuels-C, PYSOLO and TEAPOTS –, the symposium brought together experts to discuss key topics such as sustainability assessment, circularity, techno-economic analysis and product standardisation in next-generation biofuel pathways.

One of the key takeaways from the event was the importance of aligning sustainability assessment methodologies across environmental, economic, social, circularity and criticality dimensions, in order to support better decision-making and accelerate the deployment of sustainable fuel solutions.

Within this context, Fuels-C presented its approach to sustainability assessment, showing how a combination of environmental, economic, social, circularity and criticality indicators can help identify sustainability hotspots and support more informed choices in the development of advanced fuel pathways.

The symposium also highlighted a wide range of technological solutions, from negative-emission biofuel production to residue valorisation and innovative conversion processes, reinforcing a shared message across all projects: collaboration is essential to move from innovation to implementation.
