On 9 July 2025, Castelló hosted the Fuels-C Symposium ‘Pathways to a Sustainable Energy Future: Biofuel Innovations for Low-Carbon Transport’. This event brought together researchers, innovators, and industry representatives from across Europe to explore the latest advancements in sustainable fuel technologies.
Throughout the day, participants shared insights into biofuel production, hydrogen and CO₂ electrolysis, fuel cells, and the scaling up of technologies for road and maritime transport. The symposium opened with presentations from Fuels-C partners showcasing the project’s progress toward sustainable, deployable transport fuels:
- Deepak Pant (VITO) addressed biofuel production for road applications.
- Bertrand Morel (CEA) presented on direct use in fuel cells.
- Daniele Molognoni (LEITAT) focused on maritime fuel solutions.
- Gracia Silvestre (FACSA) outlined Fuels-C’s roadmap for development and scale-up.
Guest speaker Josep Albero Sancho (ITQ) offered valuable insights into advanced electrocatalyst design, a key enabler of green fuel production. The discussions continued with contributions from:
- José Odriozola (Universidad de Sevilla) presenting Flexby’s approach to flexible biofuel-based hydrogen systems.
- Francisco Fabregat Santiago (INAM-UJI) sharing the PeCATHS Project’s innovations in hydrogen storage and biomass conversion.
- Eugenia Miguel Casañ (Matteco) discussing high-performance electrocatalysts for CO₂ electroreduction.
The symposium concluded with a “Ask the Experts” roundtable moderated by Eduard Borràs (LEITAT), with key contributions from Fetech, Port of Castellón, and INAM-UJI. Discussions revolved around the practical steps and local ecosystems needed to bring sustainable fuel innovations into real-world transport systems.
Consortium Meeting Sets Strategic Direction
The day before the symposium, on 8 July, the Fuels-C consortium convened at FACSA – Ciclo Integral del Agua in Castelló for a project meeting. Partners reviewed progress across all work packages, sharing key results from testing and production activities. The meeting also served as a strategic checkpoint, aligning the consortium on priorities for the coming months.
